Parent's Guide to E-Scooters

Darlington Police are taking robust action to tackle the illegal and reckless use of e-scooters and e-bikes in Darlington town centre, warning riders that vehicles found being used unlawfully will be seized and, where appropriate, destroyed.

Darlington Police have received increasing reports from residents, businesses and visitors regarding riders travelling at speed through pedestrianised areas, weaving through shoppers and putting members of the public at risk.

Officers want to remind the public that privately owned e-scooters cannot legally be ridden on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes or other public spaces. Those found doing so may be liable to enforcement action, including seizure of the vehicle.

Neighbourhood Inspector David Littlefair said: "Darlington town centre is a place for people to shop, work and enjoy their time safely. It will not be used as a playground for those who choose to ride e-scooters or e-bikes recklessly.

We are seeing an increasing number of incidents involving riders travelling at speed through busy pedestrian areas with little regard for the safety of others. This behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Our officers will continue to proactively patrol the town centre, stop riders where offences are being committed and seize vehicles when necessary. Parents also need to be aware that if their child is riding an illegal e-scooter in a public place, there is a real possibility that vehicle could be seized and destroyed.

Our message is simple: if you choose to ride illegally or recklessly in Darlington town centre, expect police action."

Police are encouraging anyone who witnesses dangerous or anti-social use of e-scooters or e-bikes to report it. Information from the public helps officers identify problem areas and take positive action to keep the town centre safe for everyone.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour and ensure Darlington town centre remains a safe and welcoming environment for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
